CONFERENCE Disability Studies in Eastern Europe: Reconfigurations

16-18 May 2024, Kraków

As Marcin Stasiak, the Chair of the Conference Programme Committee said at the opening of the conference:

The first seminar of the Research platform “Disability studies in Eastern Europe: Reconfigurations” took place in March 2022. It was on the 25th of March. After 17 seminars, two years, one month and 22 days, 783 days – here we are. We're delighted to be opening the conference and welcoming you all.

When we first announced the call for papers back in autumn 2023, we didn't expect the conference to get so much interest. We got submissions from 22 countries, from lots of different academic centres, as well as independent researchers and representatives of cultural institutions. The great buzz around the conference meant we decided to extend it from two to three days. But it wasn't just about the number of submissions, it was about the quality.

On the one hand, the programme committee was faced with an enjoyable and scientifically enriching task - its members had the opportunity to review excellent proposals. On the other, we faced a challenge that was not easy and sometimes uncomfortable, as we could not accept all the submissions.

On behalf of myself and the conference organisers, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the committee members: Professor Monika Baar, Professor Katarina Kolarova and Professor Katarzyna Ojrzynska for agreeing to take part in the programme committee. It was a pleasure working with you. I feel privileged to have been able to hold discussions with you.

During the 3 days of the conference, participants attended 16 panels - that is 60 presentations by over 70 researchers from almost 20 countries, three workshops. The programme was accompanied by guided tours by the Cricoteka team and a performance by Katarzyna Zeglicka: "Wildgrown".

Thank to all of the participants for their presence, wonderful presentations, our lively discussions and the great atmosphere. We hope that this is just the beginning of future meetings, collaborations and the creation of a research network.
